On 20 and 21 February, UNESCO will celebrate the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day, with a two-day event reaffirming the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism in fostering dignity, peace and understanding.

About the event

Held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and online, the silver jubilee celebration event is a milestone that highlights decades of efforts to preserve mother tongues, safeguard cultural heritage and improve education.

Professor Antonella Sorace has been invited to share knowledge and insights generated by her research on bilingualism and multilingualism over the lifespan at the prestigious event on the afternoon of 20 February.

The panel, ‘Multilingual approach for literacy’, will commence at 14:30 (local time) and explore the importance of promoting literacy through mother language-based and multilingual approaches to build more inclusive, sustainable and peaceful societies.

The UNESCO event will feature a number of technical dialogues (on 20 February), high-level sessions (on 21 February), cultural performances and an exhibition celebrating global linguistic diversity, all accessible through live streaming and interpretation.

Where can I see the event?

Sessions will be streamed for online viewing in English, French and Spanish.

The webcast will be available via the UNESCO event page.
